Dynamics of Climate

The changes and variations in climate are explored by experts at NOAA, ENCAR and USGS. See behind the scenes, hear the scientist's secrets and discover ice cores that date back nearly a million years. Each night there is a discussion and analysis of the day's visits.

Day 1

Individual arrivals at the Hotel Boulderado. Check-in is 4pm.

Welcome reception at the hotel. Meet tour manager and study leader for a lecture on "Past Climate Change including changes which occurred in the Cretaceous Period and the Greenhouse Effect."

Dinner at the Hotel.

Day 2

American breakfast buffet at the Hotel.

Morning departure for Dinosaur Ridge, a museum located on part of the Morrison Fossil Bed on the front range of the Rocky Mountains. The group will be introduced to the site's fascinating history and many fossils, over 3,000 dinosaur footprints and some from the Jurassic age dinosaurs that have been discovered here.

Depart Dinosaur Ridge for National Center of Atmospheric Research. Afternoon at NCAR. Box lunch before the tour and introductory video. See new exhibit "The Climate Puzzle." Meet paleoclimatologist at NCAR, for lecture on: "Climate past, present and future." Afterwards, attend NCAR's Visualization Lab demonstration.

Return to Hotel, evening and dinner on your own.

Day 3

American breakfast buffet at the Hotel.

Morning visit at NOAA for a weather forecasting demonstration. After a break, visit the NOAA Monitoring and Diagnostic Lab and then meet in the Climate Modeling and Diagnostic Lab for a talk on "How the West Was Warmed, Climate Change from a Regional Perspective."

Depart for lunch at Rudi's World Cuisine.

After lunch, depart for the University of Colorado. Meet geologist and learn about research with ice cores at the Stable Isotope Lab at INSTAAR on the campus of Colorado University at Boulder.

Return to the Hotel. Dinner at Zolo Grill.

Day 4

American breakfast buffet at the Hotel.

Depart for Denver to visit the National Ice Core Laboratory (NICL). Visit the Lab in which scientists slice and examine core samples. Meet scientists who will lead the group into the cold storage area and discuss the various uses of the ice cores. You will need to put on insulated outerwear to visit the cold storage area.

Depart for lunch at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Enjoy lunch, followed by a meeting with Paleobotanists, who will discuss changes in climate for the Cretaceous Period to the present. Enjoy time at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science which has one of the best displays on climate and the Cretaceous Periods in the country.

Depart Denver for Boulder. Gather in the Hotel Boulderado for farewell dinner.

Day 5

American breakfast buffet at the Hotel. Individual departures.

Itineraries are samples and may change according to availability of the speaker and locations. All itineraries may be customized and modified to suit circumstances.
